Disc Bugle

A Bugled Disc is a very common issue that chiropractors see. The disc has a unique role in the body. it is positioned between our spinal bones and cushions and absorbs the impacts that travel throughout the spine. Even though it is made from strong fibrous tissue it isn’t immune from damage. Repetitive strain over time or lifting a very heavy object are common reasons for a bulging disc, especially if our form in those movements are aggravating and not protecting our spine (rounded back when lifting)

If it isn’t treated?

Disc Bulges can begin as minor tearing on the outside, if left untreated the tears deepen and pain starts to increase. As the edge of the disc weakens the inner part of the disc (which is fluid-filled, imagine it like a water balloon) starts to squeeze against this weak spot. If it is still left untreated the tears can become complete and the fluid will ooze out and a massive inflammatory response occurs. As the bugle gets bigger there is increasing pressure and pinching on the spinal nerves, causing a range of symptoms down the arms or legs (numbness, pins and needles, tingling, electric pain, paralysis weakness)

Triggers that cause this?

These discs are positioned all throughout the spine and there is a wide range of common triggers that cause this to happen. Our chiropractor will attempt to determine which of the following is applicable to you.

Common Triggers that trigger bulging discs;

- whiplash - car accident - sports injuries - falls - heavy lifting - repetitive strain jobs- Spinal Degeneration - Bending - Twisting -

How do we help?

Accurate diagnosis is crucial to ensure we recommend the right treatment. We first ask questions about you and your symptoms. we then do some important tests to tell us more information. The examination will determine if you have a Disc Bugle at all. If you do with will Determine the severity of that bugle. If the bugle is minor we should be able to guide you through the healing process, however, if it is severe we may have to refer you off to a medical spinal specialist or get an MRI.

Treatment

The fibrous tissue of the disc could be torn only a little bit or quite significantly. The severity of the tear impacts the treatment and the time needed for the body to heal that damage.

we aim to: reduce pain sensitivity, manage the pain, identify your triggers and correct them, avoid aggravating positions and tasks, give adequate healing time, support the healing tissue with good nutrition, educate on protecting the spine during healing, improve posture overall, decompress any pinched nerves,

Common techniques : Activator / Drop Piece / Blocks / Mobilisation / Chiropractic Adjustment / Cupping / IASTM Scrapping / Deep Tissue Massage / Myofascial Release / PNF Stretching / Joint Mobilisations / Strengthening / Postural Exercises / Spinal Decompression / Nerve Flossing
