Sciatica
Sciatica is a very common issue that chiropractors see. This is a condition when the sciatic nerve that runs down the back of the legs get pinched from a disc bulge in the Lumbar Spine. It can be confused with other conditions of the lumbar spine and hips because of some similar symptoms. Repetitive strain over time or lifting a very heavy object are common reasons for this condition, especially if our form in those movements are aggravating and not protecting our spine (rounded back when lifting)
If it isn’t treated?
Sciatica can begin as a minor pain in the back with referred pain down the leg and into the feet. If left untreated the pressure on this nerve can increase the more symptoms can start, such as pins and needles, burning, numbness, and pulling down the leg. This can become constant and be debilitating. There is potential that this condition progresses into a medical emergency if symptoms such as loss of bladder control start occurring.
Triggers that cause this?
Sciatica is a condition affecting the disc of the lumbar spine so shares similar triggers to disc bulges. Our chiropractor will attempt to determine what the triggers are.
Common Triggers that trigger bulging discs;
- car accident - sports injuries - falls - heavy lifting - repetitive strain jobs- Spinal Degeneration - Bending - Twisting -
How do we help?
Accurate diagnosis is crucial to ensure we recommend the right treatment. We first ask questions about you and your symptoms. we then do some important tests to tell us more information. The examination will determine if you have a Disc Bugle at all. If you do with will Determine the severity of that bugle and if the sciatica nerve is being pinched. If the bugle is minor we should be able to guide you through the healing process, however, if it is severe we may have to refer you off to a medical spinal specialist or get an MRI.
Treatment
The fibrous tissue of the disc could be torn only a little bit or quite significantly. The severity of the tear impacts the pressure on the sciatic nerve and the subsequent treatment and the time needed for the body to heal that damage.
we aim to: reduce pain sensitivity, manage the pain, identify your triggers and correct them, avoid aggravating positions and tasks, give adequate healing time, support the healing tissue with good nutrition, educate on protecting the spine during healing, improve posture overall, decompress any pinched nerves,
